HOMILY FOR 24TH WEDNESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY FOR 24TH WEDNESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “He was made visible in the flesh…believed in by the world, taken up in glory.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Luke 7:31-35

Paul gives a profound summary of the mystery of our faith to Timothy and his community in today’s first reading. He notes that: (a) Christ became one of us; (b) we came to believe in him; and (c) just as he was taken up into glory, so shall we share in his glory if we remain firm in our belief. Paul then urges us to live always as members of God’s family, sharing in the faith professed by the church of the living God, in order to share in Christ’s glory.

Already, he insisted yesterday that the leaders of God’s church must be people of impeccable character, trustworthy, accountable, humble, selfless, and moderate; people who are “conscientious believers in the mystery of the faith.” As we pray that God would bless his church with many clergy and ministers with such impeccable character, we must all remember that these virtues are demanded of all Christians, us, as well. In our effort to perfect them in our lives, we must seek to please God, and not humans. Not even Jesus could please human beings. Let us just simply be pleasing in God’s sight, thus satisfying all righteousness. Even if the people of this generation have taken God’s saving love and the mystery of Christ’s redemptive passion, death and resurrection for granted, the church, as sacrament of Christ, must remain a shining light, in its structures, institutions and persons. Everyone should live in truth and friendship with God, entertaining no fear; for alive or dead, we belong to the Lord.

Lord, uphold your life in us and save your people. Amen.
