HOMILY THEME: DO YOU HAVE THE MARK?

Ezekiel 9:1-7,10:18-22, Ps. 113:1-6, Matthew 18:15-20
Do we have the mark of righteousness? The tone of the first reading is somewhat disturbing; and rightly so. What’s interesting is that those marked aren’t necessarily the perfect ones; with no sin whatsoever, but those in Jerusalem “who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.” Put differently, those who were given the mark of righteousness were those who refused to ADAPT to the sinful culture of the people in Jerusalem; those who spoke against evil and outrightly condemned it. No one will escape judgment. In fact, the Lord tells Ezekiel that judgment will begin from the sanctuary; with us, to whom much has been entrusted.

Friends, St Maximilian Mary Kolbe believed that the world was passing through a time of intense spiritual crisis, and that Christians cannot stay INDIFFERENT. The manner in which he offered his life in the stead of a young father and husband, who was a prisoner with him at Auschwitz, suggests that he had already embodied the mark of righteousness. Though an earlier bout of Tuberculosis had left Kolbe weak and frail, he was the last to die, among the selected ten, enduring two weeks of starvation, thirst, and neglect, before he was injected with a lethal substance. He was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Can we be more like this Martyr of charity?
