HOMILY FOR 19TH FRIDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: FOR THE SAKE OF THE KINGDOM

BY: Fr. Onuoja Bright Day

Ezekiel 16:1-15,60,63, Psalm Isaiah 12, Matthew 19:3-12

“Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.”( Matthew 19:29)
The journey to the kingdom of God entails sacrifices. The sacrifice of the submission of one’s will and life to God in obedience and services.

Our gospel reading today points out a particular sacrifice some people make for the sake of the kingdom of God. From the teaching of Jesus, he says some are eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of God. These are those who have consecrated their lives for the service of God and humanity to advance the kingdom of God here on earth and finally for eternal bliss. In this category, we have the Rev. Fathers, the Rev. Sisters and all those who live a single lifestyle for the sake of the kingdom of God.

It is worthy to note that, no one commits sin for marrying, so also, no one commits sin for not marrying for the sake of the kingdom of God.
Some will always argue that, those who do not marry are living in disobedience to the command of God which says, “be fruitful and multiply” Genesis 1:28). It is never a sin and can never be a sin to be a Rev Fr. Or Rev. Sr or be single for the sake of the kingdom.
There are many other sacrifices the gospel calls us to make so that we can live peacefully on earth with our fellow brothers and sisters, and finally enjoy life eternal. The sacrifice of forgiveness, Matthew 6:14-15), the sacrifice of charity, “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” Proverbs 19:17.
Brethren, whatever good thing you do for the sake of the kingdom will not go unrewarded.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, please strengthen those who have made sacrifices and are making sacrifices for the sake of the kingdom of God here on earth and in time to come. We pray for more grace for the priests and the religious and all those holding to the truth of the gospel with tremendous sacrifices, Lord, strengthen them in Jesus name. AMEN
