HOMILY FOR 16TH TUESDAY ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “WHO IS A GOD LIKE YOU?”

Micah 7:14-15,18-20, Ps. 85:2-8, Matthew 12:46-50
Introduction
Welcome, everyone! Today, our liturgical readings show us two beautiful promises from God.
First, we learn how much God loves to forgive us. Second, Jesus shows us that when we follow God, we become part of His own family.
God doesn’t just tolerate us or put up with us. He loves us completely, wipes away our mistakes, and invites us to be close to Him.
God Throws Our Mistakes Away
In our first reading, the prophet Micah asks a great question: “Who is a God like you?”
Micah tells us that God loves to show mercy. When we make mistakes and come to Him, God doesn’t save a list of our bad choices to use against us later. Instead, the Bible says God throws all our sins into the bottom of the deep sea.

Think about that! When something drops to the bottom of the ocean, it’s gone forever. You can’t reach it, and it gets forgotten. That is what God does with our past mistakes when we ask for His forgiveness. He forgives us completely because love is who He is.
Jesus Welcomes Us as Family
In the Gospel, Jesus is teaching inside a crowded house. People tell Him that His mother and brothers are waiting outside. Jesus looks at the people listening to Him and asks:
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
Then He points to the people around Him and says: “Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother, my sister, and my mother.”
Jesus isn’t being mean to His earthly family. Instead, He is opening the door for everyone. Back then, family meant everything. But Jesus tells us that you don’t need a special background or bloodline to belong to Him. When you choose to listen to God and do what He asks, Jesus counts you as His closest family.
Putting It Together
These two readings fit together like two puzzle pieces:
1. Micah shows God’s love for us: He cleans the slate and forgives us.
2. Matthew shows our response: Once we know we are forgiven, we want to follow God and do His will.
Doing God’s will isn’t about following a long list of hard rules just to avoid getting in trouble. It’s simply loving God back because He loved us first.
What Do We Learn Today?
God Forgives Completely: When God forgives you, He leaves the past in the past. You don’t need to carry guilt around.
We Are Jesus’ Family: You are not an outsider looking in. When you try your best to do what God wants, Jesus calls you His family.
Obedience Comes From Love: Following God’s rules is just our way of showing Him we love Him.
Conclusion
As you go through your day, keep these two thoughts in your heart:
When you feel bad about past mistakes, remember that God has thrown them into the ocean. And when you feel alone, remember that every time you choose kindness, love, and honesty, you are standing right next to Jesus as His family.
May God help us to live every day as His happy, loved children.
