HOMILY THEME: “LORD, SAVE US! WE ARE PERISHING!
BY: Fr. Ernest Cross
Gen 19:15-29; Psalm 25(26):2-3, 9-12; Matt 8:23-27
In this Gospel passage, we encounter the profound mystery of Christ’s divine nature as it is revealed during a storm at sea. The disciples, seasoned fishermen, find themselves overwhelmed by forces beyond their control. Meanwhile, Jesus sleeps peacefully—not out of indifference, but from the deep trust that defines His relationship with the Father.

When they cry out, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” we recognize our own voices in moments of trial. Christ’s gentle rebuke, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” is not a harsh judgment, but rather a loving invitation to cultivate deeper trust.
The calming of the storm showcases Christ as the master over creation itself. The winds and waves obey Him because He is the Word through whom all things were made. This miracle foreshadows His ultimate victory over chaos and death, achieved through His passion and resurrection.
In our own storms—whether they be illness, loss, or spiritual darkness—we too can call upon the Lord with confidence. He who stilled the waters continues to bring peace to troubled hearts.Amen.
God bless you.
