HOMILY FOR 10TH TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — CYCLE II

HOMILY FOR 10TH TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — CYCLE II

HOMILY THEME: “YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH… LIGHT OF THE WORLD.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Mtt 5:13‐16

Today’s gospel continues to challenge us with the wonderful manual of discipleship, the Sermon on the Mount, introducing two important elements of discipleship. Jesus addresses us directly using the images of light and salt for Christian witness. In a world where life has become so tasteless, unpreserved, darkened and broken, there are no better images to define the vocation of the disciple, called to bring light and leadership into that darkness and brokenness, flavor and sustainable value to preserve the right to life and livelihood. Failure to exhibit these characteristics of salt and light truncates the mission of the disciple. Fruitful living glorifies God, whose image we bear. Begin today by dissipating the darkness, distastefulness, brokenness and despair of those around you; be light and flavor to them.

Today’s first reading on the encounter between Prophet Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath encourages us not to despair amidst the troubles and confusion in our world, but to trust in divine providence even in the most depressing of times. Our resources are scarce and so the courage to share is diminished. Christians must sustain the virtue of charity in their lives, no matter how little or how much they have. By sharing, you bless others and remain open to God’s blessing. I pray today that the hands that share and give may never lack; may the emptiness and dryness of human existence never be your portion.

Lord, lift up the light of your face on us, especially in our time of need. Amen.
