Homily for Saturday November 27 2021

We all have an impulse to run away and escape from different situations in life; we love to escape from reality; we love to escape from busy schedules and heavy responsibilities; we love to escape from a sick society; we are quick to escape from suffering, from challenges, from pain and troubles. Terry Pratchett, an author of fantasy novels says, “Escapism isn’t good or bad in itself. What is important is what you are escaping from and where you are escaping to.”Jesus prays that we may escape the moral crises and confusion that precede the end of time. He says, “Watch at all time, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man” (Luke 21:36). The Apostle Peter re- echoes the message of Jesus about vigilance when he says: “Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Even though there is no easy escape from the socio-moral crises of today, Jesus warns about the danger of being carried away by the cares and pleasures of life. He teaches his disciples two ways of escaping from anxiety and worries are: vigilance and prayers. Let us pause for a while and think: What am I escaping from and where am I escaping to?
