FR. GERALD MUSA HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 18TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLE II

THEME: THEY ALL ATE

BY: Fr. GERALD M. MUSA

HOMILY FOR MONDAY AUGUST 1 2022

There is hunger in the land and this is because of the high cost of food. Farmers are on the run because of the threats of bandits who kidnap, kill, destroy and pillage crops on farms. Consequently, the prices of foodstuff such as bread, rice, beans, and yam are on the increase. There is yet another challenge which is the high cost of cooking gas, making low-income earners resort to the traditional way of cooking with wood. Inflation and the tough economic condition are making people hungrier and angrier. In Jesus, we see how God supplies the needs of his children even in a difficult situation in the desert. He took five loaves and two fish, gave thanks, broke them, and shared it with his disciples. They all ate and were satisfied. A Ghanaian proverb says the grasshopper which is always near its mother eats the best food. By sharing the bread and fish with everyone, Jesus teaches us the importance of sharing what we have, no matter how little. He gives a good example of distributive justice. Wise people say, one who eats alone cannot discuss the taste of the food with others. We live in a society where some have a mouthful and others yawn because of hunger. Jesus wants everyone to eat and be satisfied. How possible is it for us to share the little we have with people in need?
