Theme: GOLDEN RULES OF CHARITY

By: Ben Agbo (Rev Fr)

Homily for Thursday September 9 2021

* Col 3 : 12 – 17, Lk 6 : 27 – 38.
Charity is the life wire of all Christian virtues. In today’s readings, both St Paul and Jesus each dwell elaborately on 5 dimensions of charity as follows:
A. PAUL’S RULES ON CHARITY
1. COMPASSION; Put on compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness and patience…
2. LOVE; Over all these put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony…
3. PEACE; Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…
4. WORD OF GOD; Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly…
5. PRAISE WORSHIP; Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thanks fullness in your hearts to God…

B. CHRIST’S RULES ON CHARITY
1. LOVE YOUR ENEMIES; Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you.
2. GIVE; Give to everyone who begs from you…
3. GOLDEN RULE; As you wish that men do to you, do so to them…
4. MERCY; Be merciful as your heavenly father is merciful…
5. JUDGE NOT; Judge not and you will not be judged…give and it will be given to you in good measure…
Our authenticity as Christians rests on how fervently we obey the above golden rules of charity.
* Short story; An old king told his 3 sons to do the noblest deed in order to receive his special patrimony award. The 1st returned somebody’s valuable property. The 2nd saved the life of a child at great risk. The 3rd saved his enemy from danger of death. This was the one who won the award.

May God bless you today!
