Fr. Ben’s homily for Friday after Ash Wednesday

Homily for Friday March 4 2022

*Is 58 : 1 – 9, Matt 9 : 14 – 15.
God is not a saddist. And that is why any fasting we do becomes useless if it does not produce the right spiritual effect. Today’s 1st reading warns that fasting is not salutary when it is contradicted by wickedness, selfishness and sin. Fasting should be an exercise of self denial geared towards perfection not any form of masochism or self righteousness. Fasting must therefore be done at the right time with the right intention.

What is the best time for fasting? Jesus explains in today’s gospel that it is when the bridegroom is absent. The presence of sin in our lives or the lives of our neighbours/environment signifies the absence of the bridegroom. It calls for repentance and fasting. Mortal sin takes away the bridegroom. Crimes banish him. Faults scare him away. Fasting therefore invites him back especially when it is accompanied by charity and almsgiving. Our generation is finding less need for fasting and as long as we do that our spirituality continues to nosedive. The Lenten season is a good time to bring the bridegroom back in our lives.

May God bless you today!
