HOMILY THEME: “DO NOT CLING TO ME…”

Song of Songs 3:1-4; Psalm 62(63):2-6, 8-9; John 20:1-2, 11-18
We celebrate Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus’ female disciples and friends, today. She was the sister of Martha and Lazarus (John 11–12). They were all Jesus’ close friends and Jesus and his disciples may have visited them occasionally. She, it was, who prophetically anointed Jesus for his death with the very costly ointment, the symbol of her love and loyalty to the Lord. She loved Jesus to the cross, and today’s gospel notes her fidelity to Jesus even in death. Her love and faith paid off in her persistence to solve the puzzle regarding Jesus’ missing body on the resurrection morning. When the Lord called her by name, she recognized his voice, just like he said of his sheep.

This time she would rather not let him go but Jesus insisted that she must not cling to him. Her love must evolve into a mission of making him know as the risen Lord, beginning with her mission to the apostles. By her mission, she carried and beheld Jesus in her heart eternally. Her witness, faith, love, generosity and patience are instructive to us. For in making these virtues elements of our mission and evangelization, we actually succeed in holding to the Lord eternally. She teaches us how to love Jesus in good times and in bad; knowing he is never far away from us.
Lord, let us hear your voice and know your closeness in our time of need and uncertainty. Amen.
