Theme: LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Homily for Tuesday March 15 2022

Jesus spoke against the hypocrisy of the Scribes and Pharisees. He said to the crowds and his disciples, “You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practice what they preach.” The best way to influence others is not so much by word than by example. Effective teaching goes with demonstration and effective preaching goes by living an exemplary life. This explains why Pope John XXIII says, “It would scarcely be necessary to expand doctrine if our lives were radiant enough. If we behaved like true Christians, there would be no pagans.” We remember our parents, preachers, teachers, and leaders not so much by their words but by their deeds. Abraham Lincoln tells parents, “There is one way to bring up a child in the way he should go and that is to travel that way yourself.” Children in a nursery school were shouting and the whole room was chaotic. The teacher stepped in and asked, “Why are you quarreling?” They answered, “We are not quarreling, we are just playing Mummy and Daddy.” They were imitating their parents.’ God invites all, including parents, leaders, teachers, and preachers to repentance. “Come let us talk this over, says Yahweh. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like wool.” Are we ready to change our ways and show good examples?
