Homily for Holy Saturday
Today, Holy Saturday is a very strange day in our faith. As Christians, our life is centered on Jesus in the Eucharist. We live to receive Him, and we live because we have received Him. However, today, for a few long hours, the Church deprives us of the center of life, and of life itself, because we can’t go to Communion or even go to Church to experience His Eucharistic Presence, we pass the time and patiently wait till the celebration of Easter Vigil this evening. Without Communion, without life, we feel buried as Jesus was. Yet, like Jesus, soon and very soon we will rise (Don Schwagar).
Today is a day of nothingness, a day of sorrow, a day of reflection, for our Lord is buried in the silence of the earth and we await in hope for His victory over death. There are no readings for today because there is no liturgy for this Saturday.
Dear friends, as the sun sets this evening, at the Easter Vigil, we will gather to relive our salvation history and to glory in our victory over sin and death through the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. At the renewal of our Baptism during the Easter Vigil Liturgy, we who have died to our sins with Christ, will symbolically rise with Him in newness of life.
I pray as we journey today and await our glory in Christ, we will amend every aspect of our lives in readiness for God’s outpouring of newness in our lives. May this newness be experienced today in our troubled world. May we forgive as God has forgiven us in Christ. Let us reconcile with one another so as to enjoy the freedom of the children of God (John 1: 12). Have a reflective Holy Saturday!
