Homily for Tuesday October 5 2021
“God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour. And God relented: He did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened” (Jonah 3: 10)HOMILY . The readings of today highlight the importance of listening and putting into action the message of God’s Word.
In the first reading (Jonah 3: 1-10), on hearing the preaching of Jonah, the people of Nineveh repented of their sinful and evil ways, in sackcloth and ashes, and waited on God’s mercy. For with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption (Ps. 130: 7).
In the gospel (Luke 10: 38-42), the seeming contradictory approaches to Jesus’ presence by Mary and Martha in their home is rather complimentary. Jesus tries to emphasize that our actions should be caused by our understanding of God’s directives through attentive listening to God’s Word.
Dear friends, we listen to the Word of God in order to effectively live our lives serving God and others. Faith which comes from hearing if not put into action is dead. The Christian life is real only when the tenets of Christianity is put into practice.
I pray as we journey in life today, like the Ninevites, we will follow the directives of God’s Word to turn around our life and await patiently on God’s mercy and blessings. May we actively serve God in others as well as reflectively listening to God’s Word and be drawn into a deeper and fruitful relationship with God. May we be freed from needless concerns and preoccupations so that we can give our undivided love and attention to God and in the service of others. Have a good fruit-full day!
