CATHOLIC HOMILIES: SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY (YEAR A)

HOMILY Theme: The Lord is One

By: Fr. Emmanuel Nwokeji.

Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Christian liturgical calendar.

Today’s celebration is different from others. Every Sunday we celebrate the memorial event of the Paschal mystery. Some particular dates of the Church, we celebrate the either event in Jesus’ life and that of his Mother Mary, or saints and institutions. But today is a doctrine. A belief held and taught by a church. Thus, we are celebrating the doctrine of the Holy Trinity that was defined in 325 AD. There is one God in three distinct persons. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God is one in essence and three in person. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are distinct persons, each person is fully God, and there is only One God. The God we adore, worship, praise and glorify is One God in three persons. There is a nature that is Divine, and that Divine nature is being participated by three persons.

The uncertainty and poor knowledge of this doctrine led to the rejection of Jesus by “the Jews”, also schism in the Christian unity. The Jews were inclined to debate and question. Their inherent, inherited skepticism may account for the fact that among ancient people, they were the first to successfully gave up the dominant polytheism of their world. The Jews believed in one God; monotheism. Here, O Israel: the LORD is our God, the LORD is ONE (Deut. 6:4). This words known as ” Shema” become the Jewish confession of faith, recited twice daily by devout Jews. The intent of these words was to give a clear statement of the truth of monotheism, that there is only one God.

The meaning of the word use for ONE in Deut. 6:4 …the Lord is “ONE” is the same meaning used in Gen. 2:24, that a man should leave his father and mother and clings to his wife and they become ONE flesh. The Hebrew word for ONE used in Deut. 6:4 and Gen. 2:24 was “Echad”, a Hebrew adjective which means a “compound unity”. From this, we may say literally that Shema means,
“Hear, O lsrael:
The Lord our God,
The Lord is a compound unity”. This translation therefore could be taken to be one of the primary evidence in the historic Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

The Trinity reflects God’s Love. The love communicated within them should be the same love, we on earthly sojourn communicate among ourselves. This trinitarian love is the cause for creation of man according to the image and likeness of God. Let us create man in our own image and likeness. Let us transfer our love to man. Let us extend our love to the earth. Let us make our abode in the world.

After achieving this collective task by Holy Trinity, man failed in reflecting the Trinitarian love via disobedience (Adam and Eve), hatred (Cain and Abel the just), wickedness etc.
Man’s deformation did not stop the love of God. God in today’s Gospel of John (Gospel of love and forgiveness)3:16-18 sent his Son that the world might be saved through him. At the end of the Son’s mission, he ordered us before ascension to baptise in the Trinitarian formulae, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When we gather in love to do things, share ideas, make proposals, the unity of our diversities will breed goodness, fulfillment, harmony, peace and progress.

As we celebrate today’s Holy Trinity, may our lives in relation to others, to our families, to our communities and church devoid of hatred and impart unconditional love. Amen.
