6TH MONDAY HOMILY IN EASTERTIDE — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “AND YOU TOO WILL BE MY WITNESS”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 16:11-15; Psalm 149:1-6, 9; John 15:26–16:4
The Holy Spirit continues to be at the heart of the liturgies for the next two weeks, as we prepare for Pentecost. Each day introduces an aspect to Spirit’s role in our lives. Today, Jesus introduces the Spirit as a gift from the Father, given at his behest. The Spirit will be Jesus’ witness by confirming all that he taught and did.

In our commitment to discipleship, we become co-witnesses with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will also accompany us as teacher, but more especially as protector and enabler during difficult moments and amidst opposition and persecution. As disciples, Jesus’ destiny is also our destiny. Whatever he suffered, his disciples will also suffer in the hands of an unbelieving world. So even though the first reading shows Paul having a good day on the field, having been welcomed and accepted, such moments were constantly disrupted by rejection and persecution. Paul gives us a good example of what a witness is; staying with the message in and out of season, whether welcome or unwelcome, and at the same time listening to the Holy Spirit every inch of the way. Since a solid relationship with the Holy Spirit is necessary for our journey to be fruitful and safeguarded, let us spend the time before Pentecost praying for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit, through prayer, reading of and meditation on Scripture, and charitable works that flow from the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, may your Spirit accompany us on our way through life’s challenges. Amen.
