3RD SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE EASTERTIDE: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “THEY RECOGNIZED HIM AT THE BREAKING OF BREAD.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps 15(16); 1 Pet 1:17-21; Lk 24:13-35
St. Peter’s dual witness today reaffirms the truth of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, and the fact that Christ, the precious and blameless Lamb of God, is our ransom from sin and death. He paid the price for our salvation. The Eucharistic Encounter affords opportunities to reenact that redeeming sacrifice at which he becomes present to us. Despite the deprivations forced on us by restrictions and hardships, Jesus remains present to us and journeys with us amidst our uncertainties and worries.

With faith, he is with us in our family and community gatherings of prayer, as we gather in his name. Christ also becomes present amongst us through our ministry of love to one another, for where love is, God is present, since God is love. So, we may for a moment be deprived from encountering him in the Eucharist, but we have the opportunity for spiritual communion and to make room for him in our gatherings. The doors may be shut for fear, but he would break in seamlessly, and his first words would be: “peace be with you.” Jesus seeks communion with us, not social-distance from us. Communion in and with him brings lasting peace; peace that no one and nothing can take from us. May his peace find a home in our hearts and families.
Lord, visit your people; stay with us. Amen.
