26TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
26TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: GOD DOES NOT SEGREGATE!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Num. 11: 25-29, Ps. 19, James 5: 1-6, Mark 9: 38-43, 45. 47-48
The readings of today present us with themes centered around conversion, mercy, and the call to authentic discipleship; themes necessary for community. The first reading recounts the moment when Moses, burdened by the complaints of the Israelites, receives divine assistance in the form of seventy elders who share in his prophetic spirit. The Lord’s response to Moses reflects His desire for all to participate in His mission, including Eldad and Medad who though registered, had not gone up to the tent of meeting with the others.

Friends, this theme is further buttressed by today’s gospel reading. John and the other disciples of Jesus find a man who does not belong in their group casting out demons in the name of Jesus. They try to stop him but Jesus says to leave him since no one who does a mighty work in his name will be able soon after to speak evil of him. For he that is not against us is for us. But we sometimes segregate among ourselves. This is why the second reading speaks sternly against the rich who oppress the labourer and kill the righteous man/woman. We’re rather encouraged to cut off whatever prevents us from doing good and entering God’s kingdom. This is what it means to be an authentic disciple.
Happy Sunday!
