25TH FRIDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: LIFE’S SEASONS

BY: Fr. Paul Karabari

LUKE 9:18-20

‘For everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.’

The Bible tells us that we come across different seasons in our lives. Some of these seasons are tough, while some are great. Some are for doing new things, while some involve waiting. The First Reading of today (Ecclesiastes 3:1-11) says ‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…a time to plant and a time to uproot… a time to weep and a time to laugh…a time to be silent and a time to speak.’ The beauty of creation is that God plans everything, and you are an important part of that plan.

Even in the tough seasons, we can be fruitful. We can ‘be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit’ (Jeremiah 17:8). We can be fruitful in every season; it just won’t be the same kind of fruitfulness in all seasons. Some seasons are for training and discipline. That is when we begin to see God’s purposes for our lives and can prepare. Others are for growing the seeds that have been planted. And others are for giving out and sharing the fruit with others. Our attitude in these seasons is key. When we are in a tough season, are we praying for it to end, or are we looking for the ways that God is working through it?

Some seasons defile the power of man and woman to control their lives. No one chooses a time to weep; yet no one can be happy who has not realised that the mix of life is the beauty of creation. We must learn to accept our place and commit ourselves to God’s providential care come what may. God alone lives outside time and seasons.

When we are in a great season, we must focus on being fruitful and not just enjoyment. Whatever we are facing, what we can know for sure is that through every season, God is with us, guiding us, comforting us, encouraging us, and growing us. We just need to make sure we are rooted in Him, always. It is encouraging to know that nothing lasts forever. Only God does. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our world, bless and protect us all through Christ, our Lord Amen.
