23RD FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: GOLDEN MOUTHEDNESS?
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-27; Psalm 83(84):3-6, 12; Luke 6:39-42
I am naturally drawn to names, especially ones that are peculiar in their spelling and pronunciation. I became fascinated with the name Chrysostom a long time ago. There was nothing to it at the time; I just loved the way it was spelt and pronounced. It even became more fascinating when I learned it meant “golden mouth.” I went like, “golden mouth? That’s so cool!” John was called Chrysostom because he somehow always had the right words. He wrote so much and taught tirelessly, in favour of the Catholic faith. No wonder he had as many enemies as he had followers.

Friends, ‘golden mouthness’ is a gift. For instance, St. Paul knew exactly what to say to the Corinthians this morning, in order to make them realise the importance of preaching God’s word. This is why we too must take the responsibility of spreading the gospel seriously. Jesus Christ on the other hand, always had the right words for those who followed him. Today, he encourages us to realize our weaknesses first, and work on them, that we may not become blind guides. We pray through the intercession of St. John Chrysostom, for the grace to be able to say the right things and do the right things, even when circumstances may not be too favourable, Amen.
God bless your day ahead. St. John Chrysostom, pray for us!
