22ND WEDNESDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: MINISTRY FOR ALL!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Col 1:1-8; Psalm 51(52):10-11; Luke 4:38-44
There is something about Jesus’ ministry which seems to be lacking in ours today. When many of us preach, we aren’t so much concerned about alleviating the daily sufferings and challenges of our people by bringing the gospel message down to their every day lives, we are more concerned about ‘exhibiting’ how versed we are in scripture, or how ‘intellectually sound’ we have become. Then at other times, we just want to show that we’re some kind of magicians.

Friends, in today’s gospel reading, Jesus rebukes the fever that ailed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. He goes ahead to lay hands on many who had all kinds of diseases and cured them. He would not remain in one place, but took his ministry to everyone. Pope St Gregory the Great, whose memorial we celebrate today began life as a politician, being the son of an aristocratic family. After founding monasteries in Rome and Sicily he became a monk himself. He didn’t remain in one place either, but went wherever he was needed. He was the first monk to be elected Pope and he made many reforms in the Church, writing extensively on pastoral care, spirituality and morals.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead. Pope St. Gregory the Great, pray for us.
