20TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GOD IS GENEROUS WITH HIS MERCY!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Ezekiel 34: 1-11; Matt. 20:1-16

I’ve come across some in the Church who feel they are holier than everyone else because they were baptised and confirmed in the days of Fr Stone and Bishop Mcfish. These persons may feel God will reserve the most beautiful place in heaven for them because they’re long serving ‘veterans’ of the kingdom. The gospel reading of today corrects that impression. The landowner went out at daybreak, and made an agreement to pay the workers one denarius per day. They willingly agreed. He again went out to call more workers into his vineyard at the third hour, the sixth hour, the ninth hour and the eleventh hour, respectively. He assured them he would pay them a fair wage. Guess what? In the end, he paid them the very same wage, starting from the last to the first. Was he unjust?

Friends, God calls us all at different times and rewards us all with heaven if we do His will. Pope St Pius X sought to do God’s will. He was indeed a Shepherd who cared for the Sheep rather than for himself. He was born in the village of Riese, near Venice, one of ten children of a very poor family. Ordained to the priesthood at the age of 23, he lived in great poverty even when he was Pope, and preached sermons every Sunday in the courtyards of the Vatican, to any who would listen. In his simplicity and goodness of heart, he performed miracles even when he was alive, and the clamour for his canonization started immediately after his death, on 20th August 1914, broken-hearted at the outbreak of the First World War. His mission was to restore all things in Christ. Can we do the same?

God bless your day ahead. St Pius X, pray for us!
