1ST TUESDAY HOMILY OF THE ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: BLESSED ARE THE EYES WHICH SEE WHAT YOU SEE!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Is. 11:1-10; Psalm 71:1–2, Luke 10:21-24
Isaiah beautifully presents the coming of Jesus Christ in the first reading of today. He is the shoot which springs from the stock of Jesse, and on him the spirit of the Lord rests. The same One who does not judge by appearances, but looks at the heart. As Advent brings us closer to Jesus Christ, let our daily actions reflect the joy of a people who have been privileged to see what others longed to see, but couldn’t. St Francis Xavier understood this privilege.

Born in Spain in 1506. He became a priest in 1537 and was sent to India by the Pope in 1541. He spent his life preaching in the East, including Goa, Malacca, Japan, and China, making many converts and advocating for the native population. In today’s office of the readings, he recounts his experiences to St Ignatius. He talks eagerly about how he conscientiously made rounds of the villages of new converts, how many people he converted, how many he baptised, how many elderly people he had to teach the Catechism and prayers. Friends, it is no wonder that Francis Xavier died due to ill health and exhaustion. He had poured his life out completely for others, and there was nothing left to give. Can we do same?
God bless your day ahead. St Francis Xavier, pray for us!
