HOMILY THEME: “IF YOUR BROTHER SINS AGAINST YOU…”

Today’s gospel has two aspects; the first concerns forgiveness and reconciliation. The second, is the reassurance on the union and presence of Christ with his Church, even the community’s daily activities. Often, people offend us and instead of addressing them directly, we go around them gossiping. Everyone then gets to know how bad that person is except him or her.

The first step of reconciliation recommended by Jesus cancels out that ring of gossip that often defiles our families and communities. Meanwhile, although the Church is a mixture of both saints and sinners, she constantly strives to reconcile sinners and bring them to the right path. Sinners who reject the grace of reconciliation offered by Christ and his Church shut themselves out of the saving grace of Christ’s presence amongst us. Such sinners stand outside the community by virtue of their obstinacy and recalcitrance. People who are dissatisfied with Church legislations often question the authority of the Church to legislate. Today’s gospel teaches us that Christ is one with his Church; in prayer, in worship, and in legislating what is necessary for the life of the community and its smooth running. More importantly, we have the power to make Christ present in our midst whenever we gather in his Name, especially for prayer. Let us take advantage of that grace whenever we gather; at home, school, office, community, or church.
Lord, heal and reconcile us to one another and to you. Amen.
