19TH TUESDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: WHO IS THE GREATEST?

BY: Fr. Francis Onwunali

Deut 31:1-8; Psalm (Deut 32:3-4, 7-9); Matt 18:1-5, 12-14

“It is the Lord Who marches before you; He will be with you and will never fail you or forsake you. So do not fear or be dismayed” (Deut. 31:8). These are the words of empowerment from Moses to Joshua, whom it falls on now to lead the people of Israel into the Promise Land.
In the first reading (Deut. 30: 1-8), as Moses nears the end of his life, he reminds the Israelites that it is not he (Moses), but God, who has led them thus far as their true leader. Therefore, they should obey the directives God is giving them through Joshua, God’s servant.

Jesus in the gospel (Matt. 18: 1-5, 10, 12-14), reminds the disciples to adopt the humility and openness of a child in total dependence on God, rather than dwelling on pride and self-glory, which lead to destruction. The image of God as a shepherd who cares and searches for the lost sheep is a manifestation of God undying love for us.
Dear friends, there are many distractions around us that often lead us astray, giving us false assurances. In them, we have lost our bearing. How humble and open am I in turning around to follow the voice of the Lord calling me back into the fold?
I pray thatas we journey in life today, instead of leading others astray, we will like Moses and Joshua, be instruments in God’s hand to lead people back to Him and into God’s blessings. May heaven rejoice today over us, and may God continue to march before us to deliver us. Have a hitch-free day!
