19TH FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: ARE WE DOING GOD’S WILL?

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Ezekiel 16:1-15,60,63, Psalm Isaiah 12, Matthew 19:3-12

The gospel reading of today is particularly on marriage. “Aha! That’s a tricky one”, you might say”. Far from it. Don’t forget that the Pharisees came to Jesus to ‘tempt’ him. They had an ulterior motive. In answering them, Jesus did mention that only one reason justifies divorce – porneia (translated as sexual immorality, having to do with ‘illegal’ sexual intercourse, and/or prostitution). Now pay attention: That Jesus points out this regulation does not mean He recommends it. Otherwise, John 8 would be a contradiction, and God does not contradict Himself. Jesus forgave the woman caught in adultery not because He approves the sin, but because He believes in the reality of forgiveness.

If spouses today learned to be more forgiving and understanding, they would see beyond what the law says to the will of God. And the will of God is that men remain married to women till death do them part. Imagine you caught your son plotting your assassination, you would be very justified to arrest him and send him to prison of course. Alternatively, you could decide to find out where it had all gone wrong, and strive to forgive him afterwards, no matter how difficult that may be. This would not mean that you want your son to eventually murder you. It would mean that you love him so much, and you’re willing to trust him enough to hope that he would change. So, if your spouse isn’t deserving of your mercy, who is? When the disciples mention that marriage isn’t easy, Jesus reminds them that there is always the option of celibacy. Can we accept these teachings?

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
