18TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: ASK JESUS INTO YOUR BOAT NOW!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Jer 28: 1 -17, Matt 14: 13 – 21
Have you been to the beach on a windy day? Now imagine you were rowing your boat across such windy waves, after spending the whole day serving food to a large crowd and gathering left-overs. Get the picture? Today’s gospel reading tells us that Jesus sent his disciples ahead of him to Bethsaida while he went off to pray. Jesus is God, he must have known that the winds would rise significantly, yet he sent them. But he also knew they would not make all the way without him, so he decided to walk into the lake at the very moment he saw they were completely worn out with rowing.

Friends, Jesus made to pass them by, but the disciples called to him. And Jesus responded to their cry; he told them “courage, it is I, do not be afraid”. Peter was perhaps the first to exercise this courage, for he joined Jesus and walked on water for a while, but his fears set in, and he began to sink. Jesus didn’t only save Peter from drowning, he also got into the boat with the disciples, and the wind dropped. Friends, ask Jesus into the boat of your life right now. Tell him you can’t do it alone. Tell him your fears and your challenges, and you’ll hear those words again “courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” Then take that first LEAP of faith. And even if you seem to be currently drowning, God will surely make a way!
Prayer
Lord, increase my faith!
God bless your day ahead.
