18TH FRIDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: A MODEL OF FRATERNITY CORRECTION

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Deuteronomy 4:32-40, Ps. 77:12-16,21, Matthew 16:24-28

Today, we celebrate the memorial of Saint Dominic, a passionate preacher and founder of the Dominican Order. He dedicated his life to spreading the truth of God’s love and combating heresy. He sets an example for us today in the right approach to fraternal corrections.

Saint Dominic fought against the Albigensian heresy. The Albigensians promoted a dualist view of the world, rejecting the sacraments and authority of the Catholic Church. They also denied the divinity of Jesus Christ and saw the material world as inherently evil. Recognizing the dangers of this heresy, Saint Dominic engaged in debates, catechized the faithful, and lived a life of austere simplicity, demonstrating the authenticity of his message.

What motivated his fight against heresy? It was his deep love for God and desire to share the truth, not because he wanted to be famous. He knew that wrong teachings could cause problems and hurt people’s faith, so he preached and taught to help people understand what’s true.

Saint Dominic’s approach is remarkably relevant today. In an era where many seem to correct others not out of genuine concern but to boost their online presence, his model of fraternal correction stands out. It is based on love, humility, and a genuine desire to guide others toward truth.

As we reflect on his life, let us ask ourselves: Are we committed to living out our faith with the same passion and conviction as Saint Dominic? Do we seek to deepen our understanding of God’s truth, and do we strive to share that truth with others?

May his example inspire us to be bold and courageous in our faith, to stand firm in the face of challenges, and to spread the love and truth of God to all those around us with love. May we also remember to approach those in error with kindness, compassion, and humility. Amen.
