17TH MONDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

17TH MONDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “O GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD FOR HE IS GOOD.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Matt 13:31-35

We are made in God’s image and likeness and must naturally live our lives in and with God. Humans have an innate longing and yearning for a spiritual relationship that only God can satisfy. Anytime, we substitute something or someone else for God, our yearning is futile and rebellious. Such was the rebellion of the Israelites who worshipped the golden calf.

Today’s golden calves include all the things and persons with which we sometimes replace God, all the obstacles in God/human relations, and everything/everyone that we put before God, who should be first in all things. That God is the one invisibly but actively responsible for the “unmanned” growth and change that we experience in all life forms, especially in ourselves and in the church, is a reality. Like the mustard seed and the flour, God’s activity and grace accomplish growth and fullness right before our eyes, with phenomenal outcomes. Let us be truly thankful for God’s grace. Putting ourselves at God’s disposal, we become part of that growth through the leavening effect of our good life, deeds and mission. Our presence and contributions should yield great outcomes that bring joy and respite to people, just like the birds that find rest under the branches of the grown mustard tree.

Lord, grant us growth and increase by your power silently at work in us. Amen.
