17TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: HOLDING ON TO HOPE!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Exod 32:15-24, 30-34; Psalm 105(106):19-23; Matt 13:31-35

The return of Israel to idolatry, after all God had done for them was quite discouraging for Moses. Aaron his brother who was supposed to have held the fort, went against God and bowed to pressure from the people. He fashioned for them a calf to replace God and Moses. Though Moses was furious, he had to keep bearing the responsibility of ‘parenting’ Israel. He had to keep interceding for his people. He had developed tough love for them. He held on to hope.

Friends, we need not be discouraged when things don’t go the way we planned. God’s kingdom is here to stay. As we see in the history of Israel’s salvation, God never abandons us, even when we swell with pride, and claim to know better than He does. So, when we fail, we must never give up, but keep on trying. After all, the kingdom of God starts as subtle stirrings in our hearts, like a grain of mustard seed, or like leaven, which, though gradual, have impressive results. The extent to which we bend our wills to align with God’s stirrings in our hearts, determines the extent to which we grow in Him. Are you with me?

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
