16TH MONDAY HOMILY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THE SIGN OF JONAH!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Matt 12:38-42

As soon as Pharaoh saw that the Egyptians had escaped, he harnessed his many chariots and decided to give chase. The sons of Israel were petrified, but Moses reminded them they have been fortified. They were to take courage in the sight of impending evil, since the Egyptians they saw were but ordinary people. Indeed with God they found favour, and the Egyptians they saw no more.

Friends, God constantly watches over us. He fights numerous battles on our behalf, and he asks for nothing in return. The least we can do is have faith in Him. We do not need to see mountains move, or see the earth quake before we do this. When Jesus was asked in today’s Gospel reading to show a sign that the people might believe in him, he said, “an evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” We must therefore turn from our evil ways and seek a life of righteousness. This is the greater sign, just as true conversion is the greater deliverance.

Good morning dear, have a wonderful week ahead!
