15TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: DO YOU STAND AGAINST THE PROGRESS OF OTHERS OUT OF ENVY?

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Exod 1:8-14, 22; Psalm 124:1-8; Matt 10:34–11:1

The readings of this first working day of the week portray that difficult times are part of human life, especially the life of those who are God’s chosen people, and who live according to God’s will. But in all this, we are assured of victory because of our connectedness with God, the Redeemer.

In the first reading (Ex. 1: 8- 14, 22), a King who didn’t know Joseph ascending the throne turned the hand of the clock against the Israelites for fear of their continued expansion. He ordered their extermination through hard labour and “killing of every boy born to the Hebrews.” Do you stand against the progress of others out of envy?

In the gospel (Matt. 10: 34-42, 11: 1), Jesus instructs His disciples to love Him and put Him first before any other person, even parents. All our love and relationships should lead to loving God, the source of our life. Our oneness with Christ will always bring challenges to us since we are living, not according to the standards of the world. However, in every situation, we are assured of God’s presence, which brings peace.
Dear friends, in living as true disciples and the Chosen People of God, our lives will be challenged even by our loved ones. Like the Israelites, forces will be against us, but victory will always be ours. “Happy are those persecuted in the cause of right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 5: 10).
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will strive not to allow anything to come between us in our relationship with God. With the Psalmist, may we continue to declare: “our help is in the Name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth” (Ps. 124: 8). Have a courage-full day!
