HOMILY THEME: “THE GIRL IS NOT DEAD BUT SLEEPING”

Faith and trust in God as tools needed to see and embrace hope even in the worst hopeless situation is the summary of the message of today’s liturgy.
In the first reading (Gen. 28: 10-22), Jacob encountered God while fleeing the land both because his brother Esau out of anger wanted to kill him, and his going to his maternal home to find himself a wife. He called this cite of encounter beth El – God’s abode. Jacob trusted in God, and God promised to protect him and increase him. When life seems the worst, the Lord reveals the best. The Lord gives special mercy to the most broken and rejected people.

In the gospel (Matt. 9: 18-26), Jesus lifts up the hope of two individuals who trusted in His ability- Jarius the Synagogue official whose daughter was dead and the unnamed woman who had suffered from hemorrhage for twelve years. Both were restored back to life as Jesus said, respectively: “The girl is not dead but sleeping” and “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.”
Dear friends, the Lord hears the cry of the poor, and He is “close to the brokenhearted; and those crushed in spirit He saves” (Ps. 34: 19). God’s hand is not short that He can’t reach us, nor is He shortsighted to matters concerning us. What sincere and trusting efforts are we making to seek the face of God? How resilient are we in patiently waiting for God?
I pray as we journey in life today, our faith and trust in God may never waver. May God touch our lives with His saving power, heal, and restore us to fullness of life. May we hear the words of the Master – Jesus in every situation of our life: “Courage, my child! Your faith has saved you.” Have a God-encounter-full day!
