10TH THURSDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: TEARING OFF THE VEIL!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

2 Cor 3:15–4:1; Psalm 85:9-14; Matt 5:20-26

Veils can either protect us or hinder us. As St Paul speaks about the veil covering our minds today, I am reminded of an inner disposition that we often have, that refuses to let go of sin and wrongdoing. Think about this for a moment. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom…” It is this same Spirit that enables us exercise our freedom in Christ by tearing out veils that prevent us from acting in accordance with His Word. The closer we get to the Holy Spirit, the more our minds are able to exercise control over the ‘gods’ of this world.

ALSO RECOMMENDED: HOMILY OF THE THURSDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Friends, Jesus Christ warns us against mere Pharisaic virtue. He specifically urges us to tear out the veil of unforgiveness, since God is more interested in our peaceful coexistence than He is about oblations and offerings. No one likes lip service, least of all, God. Pleasing God means we may sometimes have to displease ourselves. Yes! It means making untold sacrifices. Today, Jesus makes himself the authority behind the reinterpretation of the Mosaic laws. “You have heard it said…” (old law). “…but I say…” (new law). So, dare to be different. Disappoint all those expecting you to repay evil for evil. Be nice to people, not necessarily because they deserve it, but because you are striving to be perfect!

Prayer
That the Holy Spirit may lead us to the true exercise of freedom in holiness of life and peaceful coexistence, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead!
